OVERVIEW

JOB PURPOSE:

 

The Counsel, Office of the Equity Advisor is responsible for supporting the Equity Advisor in activities related to the mandate of the Law Society that fall within the Equity Initiatives Department. This includes committee, project-related and other work for which the Equity Advisor is responsible relating to equity and diversity issues in the legal professions, including Indigenous and French language issues and facilitating a coherent approach to equity, diversity and inclusion issues throughout the organization. Duties include working on a variety of projects and policy initiatives as assigned, including special projects arising from consideration of enhancements to equity, diversity, inclusion and access to justice and conducting legal and other research. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: 

 

  • Licensed to practise law in Canada, and if licensed outside the Province of Ontario, eligible to be licensed to practise law in Ontario under current mobility agreements*, or has relevant graduate degree coupled with legal expertise, involvement with the legal professions and/or governmental, non-governmental, community-based organizations dealing with equity, diversity, inclusion and human rights.
  • The position requires a minimum of 2 years of progressive related experience gained in a legal or other advisory capacity in a public education, human/individual rights and/or advocacy environment. 
  • Broad understanding of the Law Society’s mandate and relationship with the public and the professions.
  • Knowledge of Law Society practices, procedures and protocols.
  • Understanding of equity related legislation, theory and practice, including human rights legislation, jurisprudence, procedural justice and best practices.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, internet and intranet, and other Law Society applications.
  • Good writing skills.
  • Able to develop and communicates complex information in audience appropriate language and format.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Client / Customer Service Delivery 

 

  • As directed by the Equity Advisor, assists the Equity Advisor in planning committee and other meeting agendas, organizes research, plans for consultation, determines the content of required papers and/or reports and provides options analysis in order to facilitate decision processes and operational decision making.
  • Supports the Equity Advisory in the context of equity projects and initiatives in the development of policies and programs in the areas of education and awareness, equity and diversity in the workplace, retention, and access to legal services and the legal professions. 
  • Assists in the implementation of major projects in the area of equity, diversity and inclusion and access to justice, including particular projects as noted. 
  • Acts as a resource on subjects related to the various areas of responsibility of the Equity Advisor in the context of project planning and generally as a resource for reviews, research and policy development with respect to equity, diversity and inclusion in the legal professions and with respect to access to justice.  

Financial Responsibility 

 

  • Assists in preparation of RFPs and requests for service contracts, and supports the Equity Advisor in coordination of the vendor search and selection process as required.
  • Assists in development of the departmental budget under the direction of the Equity Advisor. 

Research 

 

  • Undertakes and manages research initiatives, including consultation, preparation of papers and/or reports, analysis of options and implications of same, in order to facilitate decisions or provide required contextual information.
  • Identifies issues to be addressed, determines sources of relevant information, and analyzes a variety of data and information in order to develop a range of alternatives. 

Special Projects and Initiatives 

 

  • Undertakes and manages research initiatives, including consultation, preparation of papers and/or reports, analysis of options and implications of same, in order to facilitate decisions or provide required contextual information.
  • Identifies issues to be addressed, determines sources of relevant information, and analyzes a variety of data and information in order to develop a range of alternatives. 

Team Membership 

 

  • Works closely with Equity Initiatives staff, and as required, with standing committees, task forces, working groups and other project committees, and various Law Society departments, assisting in broad information and idea exchange related to relevant issues.
  • Assists in the work with key constituents to ensure effective flow of information amongst stakeholders.
