OVERVIEW

JOB PURPOSE

 

The Senior Business Analyst role is responsible for complex requirements gathering and analysis for new and ongoing projects related to the business operations of the Law Society, facilitating project execution with the relevant stakeholders and project manager(s), managing competing priorities, and applying a high degree of professionalism in managing business stakeholders and setting realistic expectations. The role devises new methods and procedures for business groups using strong analytic and inductive thinking and by facilitating the application of new technologies to support existing processes while remaining consistent with the concept of ONE LSO.


The Knowledge and Business Systems Management team has two main goals. The first is to support and enhance business operations through technology changes, acting as a trusted advisor and interface between IT and the business. The second is to enable and facilitate change across all business lines of the LSO in close collaboration with IT and the PMO, by defining goals, validating requirements, providing design recommendations, and offering process solutions that deliver real business value and optimize the use of Ozzie, LSO Connects, and Dolfin.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Minimum of a university (preferred) or college degree in Business, Computer Science, or a related discipline, coupled with relevant experience in business analysis, project management, business processes, IT service management, or information systems solution architecture and design.
  • A Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) designation is an asset.
  • Relevant education or certifications in business analysis, project management, business processes, IT service management, or information systems solution architecture and design will be considered in lieu of a college diploma or university degree. Training in Organizational Change Management is also an asset.
  • Requiring a minimum of 5 years progressive and related business analysis, project management experience and/or IT or Business Service Management experience.
  • Knowledge of the business workings of the Law Society’s systems and business culture would be an asset.
  • Must have significant technology project experience.
  • Breadth of knowledge and experience in business analysis, project management (planning, implementation, measurement), and IT or Business service management under conditions of rapid change, supporting a diverse user community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills related to needs identification, business process consultation, solution selling and relationship management, and organizational change management at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to facilitate meetings, coordinate resources, and develop comprehensive documentation suitable for all audiences (technical, business, executive).
  • The ability to quickly acquire a strong understanding of business unit processes, workflows, and management control structures.
  • The ability to quickly acquire a strong understanding of performance measures, cost/benefit analysis and ROI.
  • Communicates verbally and textually in a clear, articulate manner, using audience-appropriate language and terminology, for individual and/or group situations; and makes use of other tools, such as diagrams, to ensure understanding.
  • Develops and applies complex information to problem solving.
  • Breadth and depth of knowledge / experience in Microsoft, platforms, and leveraging these technologies to meet business unit needs.
  • Experience in both Agile and Waterfall methodologies and demonstrates the ability to adjust the approach as appropriate to the project and the project team.
  • Familiarity with data integration processes, workflow automation, and CRM customization to enhance user engagement and operational efficiency.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Client / Customer Service Delivery

  • In conjunction with IT and representatives from the business, facilitates the identification of end-user requirements with respect to applications and technology solutions.
  • Assesses needs and makes recommendations, helping identify and implement strategic solutions to improve operations.
  • Consults with impacted stakeholders, quantifying end-user need, gaining agreement regarding effective system solutions and managing expectations.
  • Assists in the assessment of severity and priority of technology changes in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Translates business system design and requirements into functional specifications suitable for development of computer systems as required.
  • Facilitates meetings with business units for the purposes of evaluating and documenting business processes and requirements and/or performing a current/future state gap analysis.
  • Provides guidance to business units in the development of test scripts for User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and helps validate test results with Business Test Lead.
  • Evaluates system performance and effectiveness and provides ongoing support for agreed solutions.
  • Provides updates to business units and management regarding the status of assigned projects and initiatives, as well as potential risks to in-flight or in-place systems.
  • Provides guidance and expertise on the development of training material, in collaboration with the business owners and/or the technical trainer. 

Research

  • Researches, quantifies and assists in the development of business cases for cost-effective applications solutions in keeping with the defined and agreed needs of client departments and industry best practices.
  • Remains abreast of new trends in the industry via technical journals, Internet sources, conferences and courses, and networking with other professionals.
  • Ensures awareness at all times of organization objectives with respect to current and projected plans for provision of systems functionality to business users.

Special Projects & Initiatives

  • Leads business unit resources assigned to projects under development and provides consultation and at times, project planning for the delivery of cost-effective, stable, predictable, and responsive application functionality.
  • Builds trusted relationships with client department staff and managers, based on personal expertise and best practices with respect to technology solutions to business process requirements.
  • Consults with business units regarding process and performance issues, gains consensus with respect to recommended solutions while balancing the objectives of the organization to eliminate siloed processes and applications, and facilitates project planning, development and implementation.
  • Provides regular reports to business units and IT management regarding the status of assigned projects and initiatives.

Team Membership

  • Works closely with other members of the team and client departments in the identification, diagnosis, isolation, and resolution of complex problems.
  • Develops and shares expertise regarding Law Society application systems, and regularly communicates with team members regarding systems issues, projects, and initiatives.
  • Provides clarification to team members on technical issues, particularly regarding writing of code and tests to meet business specifications.
  • Is a key contributor to client department teams, chairingmeetings, facilitating needs identification, identifying impacts of change, and proposing strategies for managing, based on Organizational Change Management best practices.
  • Promotes the effective use of approved information technology solutions to meet business process and performance objectives. The Senior Business Analyst may be involved in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection process, and may provide work direction to team members and contract resources assigned to specific projects and initiatives.

WORKING ARRANGEMENT

The Law Society has introduced a Distributed Workforce Model to leverage flexibility and agility, and to maximize employee productivity and engagement. Work arrangements will be determined by role and departmental requirements. The working arrangement for this position has been classified as hybrid, where the employee will regularly flex their work location between home and office.
