Job Purpose

The Library Summer Student supports the library team during a period of collection relocation and space reconfiguration. The role focuses primarily on physical collection management, including moving materials, shelving, shelf reading, and assisting with related operational tasks to ensure continuity of service during the transition.

This position is ideal for an MLIS student or a student enrolled in a library or information studies program seeking practical experience in academic or law library operations.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in or recently completed a library and information studies program preferred.
• Strong attention to detail, particularly with alphabetical and numerical order.
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy.
• Comfortable with physical work, including lifting boxes and pushing book trucks.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Organized, reliable, and punctual.

Collection Relocation Support

• Assist with shifting, packing, transporting, and unpacking library materials.
• Move books safely between rooms and shelving locations.
• Apply spine labels and other physical processing as required.
• Ensure materials are arranged according to library classification systems.

Shelving and Shelf Reading

• Shelve materials accurately and efficiently.
• Conduct shelf reading to ensure materials are in correct call number order.
• Identify and correct mis-shelved items.
• Report missing materials to supervisory staff.

Public Service and General Support

• Provide directional assistance to library users as needed.
• Assist staff with basic operational tasks.
• Perform other related duties appropriate to the role.

The Law Society has introduced a Distributed Workforce Model to leverage flexibility and agility, and to maximize employee productivity and engagement.  Work arrangements will be determined by role and departmental requirements.  The working arrangement for this position has been classified as onsite, where the employee will regularly work from our Toronto location.
